Reconnecting with Dennis
As one of the most sought-after high fashion and celebrity photographers, Dennis Leupold is always on
the go: from LA to London to New York, he’s famous for photographing the likes of Rihanna, Chloe
Grace Moretz or Margot Robbie, to name a few. Today, Dennis is in Chile, south west of Santiago,
surrounded by the breathtaking contrasts of nature; a lagoon covered in mist is backed by a dramatic,
snow-capped mountain range. He’s talking about how important it is to step back and take time out to
reconnect with himself. “Sometimes I have to take a break. Go somewhere else. Travel. Be by myself and
venture off into nature,” he says.
Originally from Germany, Dennis moved to New York in his early twenties and stayed for ten years before moving to LA. He was attracted to the stretching landscapes of California and its surrounding states. When venturing out of the city, he’s looking for something he hasn’t seen. “I like to go into nature and walk off the path,” he says. But he doesn’t like to be told where to walk, preferring to discover at his own pace, taking the road less travelled.

“We’re here in Chile, it feels like we are kind of at the end of the world. But it’s beautiful because it feels
authentic, it feels raw”, he says. It’s this authenticity that Dennis takes away and applies to his
photography. “I think your art, or whatever you do in life, should have something very authentic about
it. And that’s why I love nature so much because nature is one of the most authentic things we have,” he
Although the raw honesty of nature couldn’t be further away from his highly-stylised celebrity photos, Dennis sees no contradiction in it. In the end, being an observer of all things is what creativity means to him. “Having a lot of visual influences, even if it doesn’t matter to your work right away, at some point you will look back at that trip, at that experience, at that sunset, at that special moment and it will help you in your work,” he explains. “

In the Chilean forest, Dennis speaks about the importance of getting out in nature in order to reconnect with yourself. When work gets overwhelming, which he says happens about once a month, he heads for the outdoors. “For me it’s almost like you’re going to church. You connect to a higher power.” He believes in the power of reconnecting and coming back to your everyday with a new strength.

The new Montblanc 1858 Geosphere accompanied Dennis on his trip to Chile, where he explored nature to help him reconnect with himself. Montblanc also talked to musician The Tallest Man on Earth, Kristian Matsson, who’s famous for his poetic lyrics and his unique vocal style but who also likes to get out in nature, spending time gathering inspiration and reconnecting with himself.
